Located at the intersection of West Street and Hartford Turnpike (State Route 30) in Tolland County, the Vernon Police Department was originally founded in 1890 as the Rockville Police Department. At that time, only 4 officers were employed. In 1965 the City of Rockville consolidated with Vernon under a single township. Today, more than 50 highly trained officers are dedicated to providing the best service and protection to the citizens of Vernon.

The current Headquarters building was constructed in 1979 and is the operations center for police services within the Town. The administrative office of the Chief of Police, Records Division, Detectives and a E9-1-1 Communications Center are all on-site. The uniformed Patrol Division has 3 shifts and responds to calls for service 24 hours a day year round.

Vernon is a member of the Capital Region Council of Governments which provides the community with regional funding and support.
